Wrapping Up 2024: A Year of Transformation and Impact at Migrant Women Press
What a year it’s been! As a small independent media organisation transitioning from a volunteer group to a social enterprise, we’ve accomplished so much together!
As 2024 comes to a close, we take a moment to reflect on an incredible year of growth, challenges, and achievements at Migrant Women Press.
From amplifying unheard voices to tackling critical issues, we’ve made significant progress in our mission to support and uplift migrant and diverse women through journalism. None of this would have been possible without our dedicated team, freelancers, partners and supporters like you.
Here’s a look back at some of the key moments that defined our journey this year.
Highlights of 2024:
A New Identity: We launched a fresh brand and visual identity, marking a major milestone in our journey.
Advocating Against Gender-Based Violence: We led a campaign highlighting the challenges faced by migrant and ethnically diverse victims and survivors of gender-based violence. This project brought together:
16 journalists from diverse backgrounds.
Training sessions that empowered these journalists to be prepared to write about these topics sensitively and responsibly.
Partnerships with leading women’s rights and migrant and Black and minority ethnic organisations.
More Diverse Voices in the Media: This year, we published over 70 stories, amplifying the voices of women from 20+ countries and diverse ethnic groups, each with unique experiences, backgrounds, and perspectives.
Supporting Women in Crisis: From supporting migrant women workers in Lebanon during wartime, victims/survivors of human trafficking, and women struggling with the hostile environment of inhumane immigration policies to sharing their stories, we stood alongside women navigating difficult challenges.
Memorable Events:
We participated in:
African Women in Media in Dakar, Senegal, discussing media and sustainability.
Indie News Week in Scotland, organised by The Scottish Beacon, where we discussed representation in the news.
PINF Indie News Forum, in Glasgow, to connect with independent local news in the UK.
Pass the Mic Scotland, a national gathering of women of colour.
A fundraising event for Mina Muala Non to raise awareness about period poverty.
Inspiring Conversations: Our first-ever event featured discussions with incredible migrant women—Livia Barreira, author of “Living in Sheffield - Our Journeys as Migrant Women”, Angelina Abel, and Laura Rodriguez Davis—about self-publishing and personal journeys.
Educational Contributions: We were invited to:
Speak to Master’s journalism students at the University of Strathclyde about our entrepreneurial journey.
Engage with NCTJ students to share our experiences.
Achievements in Sustainability:
Secured grants from Edge Fund and First Port.
Received donations that helped sustain our work this year.
Initiated a cross-border investigation (Italy, Romania, UK) with support from the European Cross-Border Grant Program by the European Journalism Fund EU, investigating the experiences of migrant and minoritised families targeted by social services.
Won the Tenacious Journalism Awards. This grant will help us launch a fellowship program focused on migrant women workers.
Overcoming Challenges:
This year, we faced the heartbreaking loss of our team member and friend, Nathalia Urban—a brilliant journalist and activist who will always be remembered.
Looking Ahead:
Through the challenges, our resilient team stood united, overcoming fears and barriers as migrant women navigating the complexities of this industry.
With your unwavering support, we’re ready to bring even more impact in 2025—creating opportunities, amplifying diverse voices, and challenging systemic inequalities.
From the entire team at Migrant Women Press, thank you for believing in us. Stay tuned for an exciting year ahead!
Warm regards,
The Migrant Women Press Team
